TODAY...simple woman's daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
Garden boxes ready for planting. My darling hubby has built them all and has been busy getting them ready for planting some organic, yummy vegetables and fruits~ one of the things I love about Spring is gardening.

I am thinking...
about what to name this precious baby growing inside of me. We have about 6 weeks left until "her" arrival. We think baby is a girl.

I am thankful for...
My toothbrush and toothpaste -- I know, strange, huh? But, one of my weird things about pregnancy is that I LOVE to brush my teeth -- 5x a day, at least. So, I am thankful for them!

From the learning rooms...
Well, to be honest I would really like to begin devotionals again with my girls. We have been slacking off in this area for awhile, and I see the need and desire to pick it up again.

From the kitchen...
We are having a new recipe that I found in an Eating Well magazine while sitting in the OB office.

I am wearing...
Black cargo pants and a prego shirt. Honestly, I am getting tired of my clothing choices...it is near the end of my pregnancy and I look forward to having a little bit more variety in a couple of months.

I am creating...
Oh, so many things. But, I am almost done with creating a sewing area in my guest room I am falling in love with it! I can't wait to share pics.

I am going...
grocery shopping...nothing extremely noteworthy today. But, it is part of my life ....

I am reading...
Calm My Anxious Heart, by Linda Dillow (A woman's guide to finding contentment) I am on Chapter 5 this week~

I am hoping...
to be a gracious and loving mommy to my girls this week

I am hearing...
my girls playing dress-up (roll playing -- mommy, daughter, sister) I enjoy this kind of play. That is music to my ears!

Around the house...
cluttered rooms that need the finishing touches from our whole house room change. Dirty floors that need to be swept and mopped, box of DVDs that need to be sorted, Dishes that need to cleaned, Laundry that needs to be folded and put away, toilets that need to be swished.....pretty much "normal"???

One of my favorite things...
Ecos Liquid Laundry Detergent Magnolia & Lilies ~ a great natural laundry detergent that is chemical-free, works wonders, and smells incredible!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
continue to work our home: Spring Clean Challenge
prepare for Easter ~ And do some Easter Celebration Activities

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

SPRING CLEAN CARNIVAL -- Week 1

Are you ready? Do you have out your favorite cleaning supplies -mop, rags, broom, dusting wand? Don your favorite apron and let's dive in!

You can join anytime during these next 5 weeks! Just join in wherever we are at... If you want to read up on how we are going to do the Spring Clean Challenge go HERE!

I hope you will join me ~ I need the support and what better way than to get a little clean shine to your home by doing it together?

Note: Some of you asked if you could do ALL the cleaning this week? Why YES...if you are industrious and have the time to do it all, by all means GO for it! I broke it down into smaller steps by doing one or two rooms over the next few weeks. I can only do just a little bit at a time to maintain the rest of my household!

Just remember that you get ONE entry for EACH room that you clean in your home! So, be sure to leave one comment for each room completed. There is a fantastic prize in the end! If you have a blog, it would be fun to see the before and after pictures too.
I will be doing this!

THIS WEEK: THE KITCHEN
(I will post my pictures this week!) I am starting with the Kitchen mainly because it is one of the hardest rooms and I like to get it out of the way!

Here is my plan:

  • Wash the outside of cupboards, handles
  • Wipe down windowsill
  • Shine sink
  • clean off all counters
  • clean under the dish drain
  • microwave
  • clean out dishwasher drain plug
  • clean under kitchen sink cabinet
  • floors
  • outside of appliances (refigerator, oven, dishwasher)
  • oven - inside, and outside
  • wipe down small appliances (crockpot, vitamix, coffee maker, cuisinart food processor, etc.)

Remember your plan will be different from mine.vSpring cleaning is defined by you - we'll operate on the honor system. We all have different ideas about what spring cleaning means, so I'll leave this pretty open.

Okay, Let's go!

MENU PLAN -- Passion week

We have been doing the KID version of menu planning for a few weeks now and it seems to be doing fairly well. I admit that some weeks, the kids didn't help in the kitchen, because it was just one of those nights where I needed to quickly get it done.
I am thinking of doing a little more tweaking with my menu planning....I am thinking about making the menus of concise by not just having a cookbook with main dinner dishes -- but, already having the dish set with a side dish. I am hoping that this will cut down on the planning time.
I will work with it and let you know what avails.
THIS WEEK is Passion week and we will be celebrating several activities (resurrection eggs, hot cross buns, etc.) I will be sharing throughout the week some of the things we will be doing. Look forward to that. For this week:

SUNDAY - (we ate this already and I loved it and so did the kids! -- of course, I did not go strictly with the original recipe. I added thyme, a little cream, asparagus, more gnocci & carrots, and I omitted the chicken. It was delicious. Darling hubby said it tasted kind of like a pot pie --he put his bisquit on top of his soup. So, that got me thinking about adjusting this recipe again and making a Gnocci Pot Pie!!)

MONDAY -
  • Taco Salad
  • Sliced Cantaloupe

TUESDAY -

  • Garbanzo Masala over Quinoa or Millet
  • Garlic Squash Medley
  • Naan Bread

Squash Medley

2 Tablespoons olive oil

1 pound zucchini, cut into ½ by 2 inch sticks

1 pound yellow squash, cut into ½ by 2 inch sticks

salt and freshly ground pepper

1 garlic clove, minced

1 ½ teaspoons minced fresh oregano

  1. Heat the oil in the skillet. Add the zucchini, summer squash and salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Cook over medium high heat, stirring until brown and almost tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic and stir for 1 minute. Stir in the oregano.
  4. Serve.

WEDNESDAY -

THURSDAY - Maundy Thursday

FRIDAY - Good Friday Meal
Passover Seder meal

(We are going to do this Good Friday because we have a very busy Thursday with school, Awanas, etc. planned. I wanted to take time with our girls and do the traditional Seder Meal together and explain the meaning about it to them.)

HOLY GUACAMOLE -- IS THAT POOP?

Don't Forget about our sweet
Lovely giveaway with Scooterbug Flair! Enter to win some absolutely adorable hair pretties!

It has been a day thus far.....

I woke up with a horrible, excrutiating pain in my leg calf. My husband was so gracious to help me stretch through it. Ouch!
I finally was able to drift off to sleep for a few minutes before a bright eyed two year old Rosi threw her pillow and baby in my face and said, "I yant wa-er" (I want water). So, I give her a sip of my water by my bedside. She crawled up into my bed and I was hoping she would fall back asleep...but, oh no! Of course not!
Rosi decides that putting her finger up my nose, re-arranging my hair, squishing my cheeks, poking my eyes, and flicking my eyelashes, would be a more suitable game to play than the sleep game.
Sigh...Honestly, I was so tired and achy, that I really didn't care and sometimes I think I may have fallen asleep through it.
When my darling husband woke-up, Rosi was on her move and she got up with him. Phew! Some moments of peaceful sleep. Well....maybe.

I am hearing yells of the other girls questioning about this and bout that --
Where is the bread for toast? (In the freezer)
Is my friend Lexi coming today? (yes)
Can I have some Orange Juice? ( Ask your Dad)

Then...my husband leaves to take Sophia to school -- but before they left I hear Sophia proclaiming:
"HOLY GUACAMOLE -- IS THAT POOP ON ROSI's FACE?"

Uh...
What?....

So, I crawl out of bed to find Rosi in the kitchen with a butter knife putting homemade grape jelly on her frozen piece of bread and in her mouth. I am not sure what is on her face? I am in a daze and my leg still hurts. What happened to your face??

Well, it was NOT POOP! (Thank you Lord)
It was not grape jelly.

It was Momma's make-up! Ahhhh, Noooooo!
See, I just bought some new make-up. And, any girl knows that make-up is NOT cheap! It cost money and when you are on a budget and spent a little of the grocery money to satisfy a grumpy, frumpy, awkward at the moment, not-feeling-sexy, blah PREGNANT woman -- messing with her beautify-ing things ---is NOT OKAY.

Now, I haven't even gone pee yet. That is usually what I do when I get out of bed. I was so in-tuned to Holy-Guacamole- She's got Poop-on her face-- that I didn't even get to that point. I cleaned my precious make-up first, then I cleaned my precious two-year old's face with some ponds cold cream I had. And, guess what little fingers tried to help by dipping her fingers into a the jar pulling out a huge glob of cold cream?? Yeah, you know.

So, off to clean up jelly that spilled on the floor to discover that my four year old Lydia (still in nighttime pull-ups) sitting in the middle of the living room floor getting into four bags of clothes that were just given to us (I put them there to go through today -- but not until LATER today). I see that I have a helper to get it started?
Lydia was determined to try them ALL on...but, I had to gracefully (even though, I was steamed at this moment with a VERY full bladder) ask her to put them back into the bags and find some clothes already put in her closet.
Begrudgingly, she complied.

FINALLY, I was able to go use the water closet!

-- cook the frozen bread and magically make it toast! (Where as my children wanted --no demanded -- to eat it outside -- and after a few minutes of eating their toast out there on the pic-nic table, came back into the house with a zillion goosebumps and shivers and decided it was TOO cold to eat there. ( Do they listen to mom's advice?)

--Make some tea for ME!
And, as I sat with my warm cup of tea in my hands and ate a Reese's chocolate egg -- I looked around my house. Let out a HUGE sigh...because there surrounded me was a year's worth of work.

Laundry, Dishes, Dirty Floors, Games spewed everywhere, Children's dirty clothes sprung out onto the floor, toys, babies, books, bags of hand-me-down clothes, pretzels on the carpet, dirty dishes in the living room, and so on....

Can you guess what I am doing today?

Yeah, my job continues... I am going to grab another chocolate egg, don my apron, pull-up up my ragged hair, and begin the duties of home on the range.

"...Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah)..." - Colossians 3: 23-24

Pursuit

Much of our difficulty as seeking Christians stems from our unwillingness to take God as He is and adjust our lives accordingly. We insist upon trying to modify Him and bring Him nearer to our own image. - A.W. Tozer

God is holy. By pursuing His holiness, we are pursuing His heart.
The depth of our relationship with the Lord will directly reflect the depth of our relationship with others.

Once we begin to learn and delight in the heart of God, we recognize the things He desires and pursues.
Pretty soon, we find Him pursuing us.

And in this mutual pursuit we come to find our lives reflecting His heart. As women, the desire to be pursued will never wane, but may we not forsake our call to pursue the heart of God and reflect His peace to the world.

MEAL PLANNING -- A KID Edition!

REMINDER: Lil Daisies Bloom Away (Giveaway -- ends on March 20th) Don't forget to enter to win a $50 gift credit towards Frogmama's store! HERE!

You can scroll down towards the end for our menu plan this week.

I shared a little bit how I normally meal plan earlier. However, I was reading on another blog about how she meal plans and it got my brain stirring up ideas and motivated to do something a little different, a little change for a little while. I don't know how long this will last, but I am hoping that for sometime it will be inspiring for my family and a learning experience for my children.

My idea (not sure if it is really mine) is to get the kids more involved with the meal planning. I want them to experience how to meal plan: going through the process of picking out delicious healthy meals, planning out balanced meals, grocery shopping and how to save money, as well as prepare the meal!

Of course this takes a little patience and time, but I feel like it is worth the learning experience for my girls to becoming future Godly wives of their homes.

This is what we did:

PREP PART ONE:
I pulled out cookbooks (with pictures for the little ones), my computer recipe archive, and we sat down as a family and shared with each other meals that we like or would like to try. We wrote down at least 30 meal ideas. Part of planning a meal was making sure that it was balanced. We talked about balanced meals and flavors that would go together.
Notice the TV screen? I thought that was pretty ironic!

PREP PART TWO: I created a family cookbook that included pictures and the recipe of all the meal ideas we wrote down. I used a word processor to write out the recipes and attach a picture to each one.

NoteCard Method: You could also write recipe cards with each meal assigned a card. One one side of the card, possibly attach a picture for the little kids. (I am thinking about using menu cards with each dish and side dishes listed as well in the process)

MEAL PLANNING DAY:

  • With our cookbook in front of us, I let each child choose one dish they would like to prepare that week. We also check out our pantry and freezer to see if there are ingredients that we could use first. For example, we have Mahi Mahi in the freezer, so we look for a dish that uses the Mahi Mahi fish.
  • We assign each child a day of the week to place their dish to make -- as well as side dishes to go along with our main dish.
  • Each child will help out preparing and cooking the meal they have chose on the day it is assigned. At this point, I only allow one meal per child in the kitchen a week. They can help me choose the dishes for the rest of the remaining days of the week and I may throw in a "new" recipe one day a week too, but they are to help me in the kitchen only one day a week.

If using the card method: With each recipe card laid out on the floor, each child chooses which meals we will prepare this week.

  • We come up with our weekly menu plan and write it out on our menu calendar!

I found these great menu planning pads that have a magnet attached onto the back
for easy placing on the fridge! I found them for 50 cents each at Michaels.
There are 52 pages in each. I stocked up on this cute find!

If using the card method: keep the recipe cards attached with a paper clip. This goes up on the fridge!

  • Next, we go over each recipe and write the ingredients on a grocery list. We then check our pantries (pantry, fridge, freezer) to see what ingredients we might already have and then cross that ingredient off our list.

NOTE: I am thinking about creating a weekly clear pocket calendar where we can put each recipe card (picture shown) up on the fridge and it would be a visual to see what we are eating on that day. Just a little creative way to display our meals.

GROCERY DAY:
If the girls are with me on grocery shopping day, then I will have them be involved. I let one hold the grocery list and then when we find an ingredient, they help me find the best price, organic if possible, and then put it in the cart.

COOKING DAY:
On their assigned day (the meal they chose), they help me prepare it and cook it. They like to wear their aprons and chef hats and use their own tools (small knife, whisk, spoons, cutting board)I also have them set the table for dinner as well.

Our Menu

COLOR MY WORLD

I read about this fun activity from Monica @ The Homespun Heart and also at InCourage! I however, did not make the challenge deadline, but I loved the idea of doing this project and decided to do it with my kids.

We got out the coloring books we had in our home and set out the crayolas and COLORED!
I had forgotten how good it felt to just relax and create, color, and imagine. I did feel like a kid again and it was a freeing feeling. AND, I loved being able to just color and giggle with my girls.

I started on one picture and then had so much fun, I ended up coloring three of them! Let me share with you my masterpieces and why I chose these pictures to color!

1st: "Mama is a Turtle"
I laughed a little bit when I chose this one to color -- but, in all reality it is how I feel sometimes. I am carrying a large load of kids, activities, lists, luggage, life, etc. on my shoulders and yet I feel really slow about getting anywhere or anything really done. I am sure some of you moms can relate?

2nd: "Mama is Blessing to Her Children"
I liked how the child is on his knees listening to the important words of his mother reading the Holy Bible. Mother is teaching the ways of Christ to her child and praying and blessing over her child. This is an influence that I strive for in my life towards my children. To train them in the ways of the Lord

3rd: "Keep Love In Your Heart"
I liked this one for what it said, "Keep love in your heart." And, well she is cute and fashionable too!
